POND BUILDING BEGINS
September 1st, 2009

Day 1 - We decided to build the pond in the backyard in an area where rain waters runs down the little valley to the right into a city storm drain on the other side of the chain link fence. My neighbor Matt is pondering how he will build the retaining wall at the low side. The PVC pipe will be under the pond liner so rainwater will flow under the pond instead of into it. We also thought it a good idea to build the pond in the shade!

Day 2 - I laid out the retainer wall blocks to see how the pond area would look from our deck. The pond will be within this area with 3-5 feet wide landscaping around it. The "bridge to nowhere" is too small and we are at loss as where to put it. Chopped up and placed in the fire pit would probably be best! The pile of rocks between the trees is where we will dig a hole for the bio-filter which will be the start of the waterfalls. The blue heron is cement and we'll soon be visited by the resident real one when the fish go in.

Day 3 - The retainer wall blocks are gone and I rented a sod cutter to start the digging. The heavy clay sod is chopped into 18" x 12" blocks and forms the pond walls. We will dig the deep part to 5.5' x 9' x 28" in the lower right side and 5.5' x 9' x 26" on the higher left side so in a year or so when we want to clean the bottom of an emptied pond the sediment can be hosed to the lower side and removed easier. I say we but most of the hard diggning was done by my neighbor Matt and my son Brian There is a 1' wide shelf around three sides and the fourth side nearest the trees is 2.5'. The shelf will be about 1' under water for boulders and plants. The liner going up the slope will be overlapped with the waterfall liner but that part is a ways off yet.

Day 4 - The pond liner is 20' x 25' and filled to just the shelf level so the pond skimmer box and 5,000 gal pump can be affixed to the outside of the iner in the right corner furtherest from the trees before filling it up entirely.

Day 5 - A day of rain. A day of rest!

Day 6 - Testing the force of the pump at the bottom of the pond. It will eventually go into the skimmer box to the right.

Day 7 - Skimmer box in place. Hose to take the water from the skimmer box to the homemade bio-filter affixed to the pump.

Day 8 - Brian is checking the two garden hoses filling the pond to its highest level. Pump is activated. The pond is filled to the level indicated on the pond skimmer opening and we are not overflowing the banks. The surface of the pond is approx. 9' x 14'. Success!

Day 9 - Lining stone from the edge of Matt's driveway and from Menard's. We took sod over to Matt's house to fill in the void along his driveway where the stones were removed. Brian and Sidney Lynn brought over some of our fish they were keeping in their pond from when we moved up here last year. Bridge has gotten closer to the woods!

Day 10 - Finished off the stone around the pond. Cannot do anymore until we get boulders and plants packed all around the shelf. The yellow heavy duty extension cord will be buried in a trench coming back up to the deck and hid under mulch and up on the deck to the electrical outlet. Had to spend the rest of today mowing and weed-eating which was getting behind. The pond skimmer is picking up leaves in the debris catcher and the filter in it has cleared the water. We are now looking for the cheapest place to pick up various sized boulders varying in weight and size approx, 10 - 25 pounds.

Day 11 - First of three loads of rock hauled in today. 1st - over 3,000 lbs (this one), 2nd - nearly 3,000 lbs, and 3rd 1,200 lbs smaller rock.

Day 12 - Brian added grass and water lilies. Next up is rearranging all the rock!

Day 13 - Pond about done. We start on the waterfall or two streams coming into the pond this week.

Day 14 - Two more truckloads of rock hauled in and washed for the waterfall.

Day 15 - This drain pipe takes rainwater from the higher ground under the pond.

Day 16 - Building the bio-filter. Net bags contain coral rock that will go in the pit and become the bio-filter.

Day 17 - Starting on the waterfall. More like two streams coming from the top.

Day 18 - October 21st - done. Also build a small rock/mulch trail around the back. Eighteen work days in nearly two months because of rain.
